It is annoying to have to spend time dissecting stupid newspaper articles written by stupid newspaper reporters. However, some articles are so obnoxiously stupid that one can't just let them pass. Take a recent article in The Telegraph, written by the paper's defense editor, Con Coughlin. Written before Ukraine’s drubbing at the hands of England in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2020, the article carries the none-too-subtle title "Ukraine’s progress at Euro 2020 is one in the eye for Putin." The author’s argument, if one can even call it such, was that Ukraine, by dint of having reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, had dealt a huge blow to the prestige of the Russian Federation in general and to President Putin, in particular.
